Continental Airlines Introduces New Meals and Snacks for On-Board Purchase

Menu includes hot Angus cheeseburger, grilled chicken spinach salad, fresh fruit and cheese plate and popular brand-name snacks

HOUSTON, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today announced a new menu featuring a variety of high-quality, healthy food choices available for purchase in economy class on select flights beginning Oct. 12, 2010. The new meals and snacks will be offered on many U.S./Canada and certain Latin American routes.

The menu will include freshly prepared hot and cold mealtime selections similar to those served in casual-dining restaurants, such as Asian-style noodle salad, grilled chicken spinach salad, Angus cheeseburger, and Jimmy Dean sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. Snack and dessert options — including a gourmet cheese & fresh fruit plate, several types of snack boxes, a la carte brand-name snacks and chocolate-covered Eli’s Cheesecake on a stick — will also be available for purchase.  Prices will range from $1.50 for Pringles Original Potato Crisps to $8.25 for the grilled chicken spinach salad.

“The new menu is a direct result of feedback from our customers, who told us they wanted more food choices on our flights,” said Sandra Pineau-Boddison, Continental’s vice president of food services. “With that in mind, Continental researched trends in the restaurant industry and tested and tasted a broad range of possible menu items in order to provide dining options that reflect today’s customer preferences.”

The new food-for-purchase menu will replace the complimentary meals and snacks currently served in the economy cabin on the select routes. Continental will continue to offer complimentary food in the economy cabin on all intercontinental and certain other international routes, and on long-haul domestic routes over six and a half hours. Continental will also continue complimentary food service in the front cabin (first class and BusinessFirst) on routes worldwide. Traditional non-alcoholic beverages will continue to be complimentary on every Continental flight.

Eli’s Elias Kasongo honored by Episcopal Migration Ministries for World Refugee Day

As designated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, World Refugee Day (June 20th) is an annual observance commemorated by refugee advocates across the world as an opportunity to lift up the concerns of uprooted people globally.
Eli’s Cheesecake’s Elias Kasongo was recognized by Episcopal Migration Ministries for his work and efforts for education and Eli’s was recognized for our encouragement in the advancement of their refugee workforce. We’re so proud of you, Elias!

“Experience America” Brings Ambassadors to Chicago/Eli’s Provides Dessert at the Closing Reception

Experience America is a initiative of the US State Department to annually  take Ambassadors to different cities to observe the local economy and culture. With the both the President and Secretary of State having deep Chicago roots, it made Chicago a natural for this first trip in the Obama Administration.

Eli’s provided an assortment of Couture Cheesecakes and Dipper as part of the Taste of Chicago Reception.

Foreign ambassadors invited to visit Chicago

Diplomats to meet with mayor, tour Obama’s hometown

Chicago will play host to dozens of foreign diplomats for three days next month under a State Department program called “Experience America.”

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday will unveil details of the trip to about 150 ambassadors, whetting their appetite with Eli’s Cheesecake, a State Department official said.

The official, Capricia Penavic Marshall, the nation’s chief of protocol, will lead the Chicago trip May 12-14.

“Experience America” began in 2008 under President George W. Bush, and the upcoming trip is the first since President Barack Obama took office, she said.

The program aims to introduce a distinguished group to “the best of America, and Chicago is the perfect city to do just that,” she said.

Chicago won the nod in part because so many ambassadors were curious to learn more about the president’s hometown, she said.

About 50 ambassadors, many of them with their spouses, have taken past trips through “Experience America,” which has hit New York City, Florida, California and Texas.

The ambassadors will be welcomed by Mayor Richard Daley and his wife, Maggie, at a reception in the new wing at the Art Institute of Chicago and will take in the Matisse exhibit.

Also on tap: Visits to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Wrigley Global Innovation Center, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Chicago and Field Museum, where the ambassadors will lunch with civic leaders.

They also will take an architectural tour by boat and attend a “Taste of Chicago“-style farewell party with the mayor at Millennium Park, Marshall said.

In a statement, Mayor Daley praised the program and said, “The well-being of cities like Chicago depends to a large degree on how we plan for and deal with global inter-connection.”

Ireland’s ambassador to the U.S., Michael Collins, is among those planning to have his passport stamped “Chicago.” He came last for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. “A wonderful opportunity,” he said by phone Monday from Dublin.

Collins took in Florida, Texas and California on the previous trips and said they let diplomats “experience the wider America,” engage with local leaders and pursue issues such as energy efficiency.

He called Daley “a good friend of Ireland and a good friend of mine.”
