Eli’s Cheesecake Honored to be Illinois Made

Today we were featured by the Illinois Office of Tourism in the Illinois Made Global Makers campaign, featuring Illinois-made products in marketing to overseas visitors.  Eli’s has been proudly handmade in Chicago, Illinois, since 1980!

To celebrate,  Executive Pastry Chef Laurel Boger created this 300 pound cheesecake which was displayed today at the Abraham Lincoln Museum in Springfield, Illinois, and will be cut and served to attendees at the Illinois Governor’s Conference on tourism tomorrow.

It took 175 lbs. of cream cheese, 40 lbs. of sour cream, 50 lbs. of sugar, 130 eggs, 25  lbs. of cookie crust, 1 pound of  Illinois made  Nielsen-Massey Vanilla and 10 cups of wildflower honey produced by student bee keepers attending the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences to create this cheesy rendition of the Illinois State Capital.  In a nod to Lincoln and his love of apples, the giant cheesecake included a layer of Cinnamon Apple Cheesecake and the cake’s base was decorated with super-sized edible gold dusted chocolate pennies.

Enjoy a “slice” of our Illinois Made Cheesecake! Eli’s Honest Abe Apple Cheesecake is available for sale on our website.

“The factory behind all the cheesecakes you’ll see running amok in Chicago, Eli’s Cheesecake World has a deli next door with an insane amount of cheesecake. Sure, sure, you can get a sandwich, but personally, we’re sticking to the peanut butter chocolate cheesecake slice with only a few full cheesecakes to go, please.”

Eli’s Cheesecake on NPR’s Morning Edition

Today,

Eli’s Cheesecake was featured on NPR‘s Morning Edition segment. For Eli’s Cheesecake President Marc Schulman, “people who come as refugees have great skills.” At Eli’s, there’ s a strong passion towards providing equal opportunity to all individuals including refugees. The refugee employees come from various countries such as Iraq, Bhutan, Kosovo, Congo, Myanmar. Featured on the segment was Elias Kasongo, who began working at the bakery in 1994 after fleeing unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His story reflects his perseverance and determination to succeed. He started with a job in the dish room at Eli’s and was eventually promoted to purchasing manager. He has been a part of Eli’s for 22 years and also serves on the board of RefugeeOne, a Chicago nonprofit that helps refugees start new lives.

Others highlighted are 46-year-old production leader,  Zamira Bejrektarevic who started as an office cleaner who worked her way to become production leader, and Ray Hermez, who works on the production line boxing finished cakes.

Eli’s Cheesecake takes pride in helping to provide opportunities to individuals and discovering Refugee talent.

Eli’s Welcomes UN High Commissioner Filippo Grandi and RefugeeOne

Eli’s had the pleasure to welcome UN High Commissioner Filippo Grandi of UNHCR and many other officials of RefugeeOne today, March 18th.

Filippo Grandi became the 11th United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on January 1st, 2016. He was elected by the UN General Assembly to serve a five-year term, until December 31st, 2020. Grandi is responsible for of all refugee affairs in the world, and his visit to us Eli’s was greatly appreciated. The visit was a special opportunity for Eli’s associates to share their stories with not only our guests, but with each other.

At Eli’s Cheesecake, we are very proud of our long time partnership with RefugeeOne, the largest full service refugee settlement agency in Illinois. RefugeeOne is a refugee resettlement agency that provides a full range of services to refugees resettled in the Chicago area. Without RefugeeOne, we would would have never met Elias Kasongo, who came to Eli’s Cheesecake in 1994, at the age of 22, after being held for 4 years in a refugee camp in Zambia after leaving his home in the Congo. Over those years, Elias has gone from the dish room to becoming Purchasing & Materials Manager with a degree from Northeastern Illinois University, having a beautiful family and now a home owner. Elias now sits on the Board ofDirectors for RegueeOne and  was a keynote speaker at the 2014 RefugeeOne Gala.

Eli’s is proud to have a number of associates whose lives have been aided by RefugeeOne, and looks forward to continuing our longtime partnership with the Organization.

The Eli’s Cheesecake Cookbook featured on WGN Radio

On November 29, Eli’s Cheesecake Owners Marc and Maureen Schulman joined Dean Richards on WGN radio’s “Foodtime Show” segment to discuss The Eli’s Cheesecake Cookbook. During the show Marc and Maureen discussed the rich history of Chicago food and Eli’s Schulman’s influential role in the Chicago food industry. While Eli’s Cheesecake is known for cheesecakes, the cookbook does not solely focus on cheesecakes. Instead, the cookbook is a combination of traditional Chicago dishes, influenced by Eli’s Place for Steak, such as “Liver Eli” and “Shrimp Marc,” favorite cheesecakes, and useful tips and tricks. Richards thus named the cookbook as “retro,” given its revival of Chicago classics. Maureen was able to give some book details including some of the available recipes as well as her top favorites.
