Eli’s Cheesecake was honored to join leading Chicago Chefs and Restaurants at a welcoming reception at the Chicago Cultural Center. The Chicago Cultural Center is one of Chicago’s most beloved and historic buildings. Completed in 1897 as Chicago’s first central public library, the building was reopened in 1991 as the Chicago Cultural Center, the nation’s first and most comprehensive free municipal cultural venue.
Dinner was served in Preston Bradley Hall featuring the world’s largest stained glass Tiffany Dome – 38 feet in diameter with some 30,000 pieces of glass ―which was restored to its original splendor in 2008. Following dinner was a Sweet Home Chicago Dessert Reception in the G.A.R. Rotunda featuring Eli’s Cheesecake, Original Rainbow Cone and Art Smith’s Table 52. Guests then enjoyed a performance by Lynn Jordan and the Shivers in the Grand Army of the Republic Hall.

In 2010, Eli’s Cheesecake and the Taste of Chicago will celebrate their 30th birthdays. It was on Michigan Avenue on July 4th that Eli Schulman took his cheesecake to that first Taste. Over the years, we have sold over 3.5 million slices of Eli’s Cheesecake and worked with several thousand teen agers who have now advanced to positions of leadership in business and government.
This week, we were visited at Eli’s by Jill Takiff Hirsh, the daughter of our long time friends, Sandy and Bobette Takiff. Jill is the Chairman of the First Bank of Highland Park, a position she assumed from her now late father and visited us with long time friend and banker, Vic Stasica. When Jill arrived at Eli’s wearing an Eli’s Cheesecake Hat, we were delighted to learn that it was kept from Taste of Chicago 1993, which was her first summer job. Eli’s Taste Manager, Mike Neuhaus and Lisa Ripka, welcomed Jill to Eli’s and thanked her for her summer of service.
Several years ago, we were delighted to have a special guest join us at our Taste of Chicago booth: Lisa Madigan, the Attorney General of Illinois. Lisa “grew up” at Eli’s as her parents Mike and Shirley Madigan were dear friends of the Schulman Family and regular customers at Eli’s the Place for Steak. It was only natural therefore that an early summer job was working at Taste. We were very happy to have Lisa join us to once again have that experience.
Ten Days Fly by so quickly! Thanks to our customers and fans who purchased over 112,000 slices of Eli’s Cheesecake at Taste of Chicago in 2009. 2009 marked our Celebration of the 29th of Eli’s Cheesecake and the 29th Birthday of Taste of Chicago. This year also marked the year that we celebrated the 100th Birthday of the Burnham Plan of Chicago. It was on July 4th, 1909 that Daniel Burnham, Edward Bennett and the Commercial Club of Chicago released their vision for Chicago to the public. It is very fitting that it was 71 years to the day that Eli’s Cheesecake made its public debut outside Eli’s the Place for Steak at that very first Taste of Chicago.
2010 will be a very special year as we celebrate the 30th Birthday of Taste and Eli’s Cheesecake. On a personal level to all of us at Eli’s, it will be even more special as we celebrate the 100th Birthday of our founder, Eli M. Schulman.

The Bean Queen: Taste of Chicago
One of the things that Laura and I were both looking forward to on our trip to Chicago was attending the Annual Taste of Chicago Food Festival. I think this is one of the biggest such festivals in the country, it lasts for 10 days! …
“I tried the Eli’s Chocolate Chip Crunch Dipper. Cheesecake covered in chocolate and Heath candy. It is a great way to start or finish your taste experience. Eli’s Cheesecake is the number one seller at the Taste. ‘You can come and get a dipper. You can come and get strawberry cheesecake or turtle or Oreo cheesecake. We have something for everyone,’ said Nicole Neuhaus, Taste Manager.”
