Taste of Chicago: Who are all those people anyway?
Fareen Vora, 23, North Side
How long have you been attending the Taste? “Since I was a kid, maybe about nine years.”
What do you like about it? “The Taste is fun. You get a taste of all the restaurants.”
Why did you decide to come again today? “My co-worker and I planned it for a committee event for work. [And for] the cheesecake, I get it every year from Eli’s Cheesecake. It’s a once-a-year thing.”
What tip would you share with a newcomer? “Break out of your comfort zone. Try something new. Like the barbecue tamarind sandwich or the fries with mango chutney [from Vermilion]. I was thinking I’d go back for some more. Also, come in the evening when it’s starting to cool off.”

Eli’s Cheesecake celebrates the 28th Birthday of the Taste of Chicago and Eli’s Cheesecake at the Taste!
It has become a tradition that we celebrate the birthday of Taste of Chicago and Eli’s Cheesecake on the first Saturday of Taste with a Giant Birthday Cheesecake and complimentary cheesecake for all. Saturday, June 28th was a beautiful day in Chicago and we celebrated at Buckingham Fountain with the Chicago cast of the Jersey Boys and other special guests.
This is a cheesecake so big that you need a forklift to move it into position.
Eli’s Pastry Chefs under the direction of Executive Pastry Chef, Laurel Boger, created a three-tiered 2000 pound birthday cheesecake decorated with marzipan cherries the size of baseballs for the birthday celebration.
Cast members from the Chicago Company of Broadway’s Tony Award winning Jersey Boys were on hand to lead the crowd in a round of “Happy Birthday” before joining Eli’s special guests to cut the giant cheesecake. The cast of the Jersey Boys (on the left) are joined by Eli’s President, Marc Schulman, 42nd Ward Alderman, Brendan Reilly, Eli’s Maureen, Haley, Kori and Elana Schulman. Second City Producer Emeritus, Joyce Sloane and Paula Froehle and family, the Academic Dean of Flashpoint, The Academy of Media Arts & Sciences, Chicago’s new digital media college, and Mary Slowik, the Manager of the Taste of Chicago.
The cast of the Jersey Boys enjoyed the cake cutting so much that they stayed on to pass out several hudred samples slices to the assembled crowd.
Eli’s Operations Team takes a break from the Bakery and helps several thousand slices of Eli’s Cheecakecake.
We always tell the story of how my dad, Eli M. Schulman, took his signature cheesecake from Eli’s the Place for Steak to that first Taste of Chicago on July 4, 1980 on North Michigan Avenue—the only year that the Taste was on Michigan Avenue.
Here are photos of our booth at that first Taste. The three flavors of my dad’s cheesecake making their public debut: Chocolate Chip, Plain and Raisin Cinnamon all for $1.50 per slice. Today we offer our Taste Portion of Original Cheesecake at that same price–28 years later!
Chicago Believes–Celebration of Chicago’s Bid to Host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games Features Eli’s Dippers as Gala Dessert
On Monday, July 14th, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and Chicago 2016 Chairman Pat Ryan, hosted a Gala Dinner for 2,500 people at Millennium Park which raised $12 million for Chicago bid to host the 2016 Olympics.
The theme of the evening was “Chicago Believes.” Eli’s Cheesecake was delighted to support the evening by donating the 2,500 Eli’s Cheesecake Dippers that were given to the guests as they departed the Dining Tents for the program at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.
The dinner highlighted this year’s Olympics in Beijing with Peking Duck Salad, in London in 2012 with Pan Roasted Filet of Beef and Chicago 2016 with Eli’s Cheesecake Dippers.
It was a perfect night in Millennium Park to celebrate Chicago’s Olympic Bid for 2016. The perfect dessert for the celebration were Eli’s Cheesecake Dippers which were passed out by a great staff of volunteers as guests walked to the entertainment program for the evening.
Chicagoans love Eli’s Cheesecake and our Dippers. Some of the 2,500 guest enjoying Eli’s were world famous Chicago architect Helmut Jahn and 43rd Ward Alderman Vi Daley and husband, Vince.
Eli’s Maureen and Marc Schulman celebrate the success of “Chicago Believes” and the commitment of the Chicago business and civic community to bring the 2016 Olympics to Chicago. This has also been a very busy month for Eli’s Cheesecake Dippers with over 20,000 sold at the Taste of Chicago and now another 2,500 enjoyed at the Gala. Eli’s Cheesecake Dippers are the
perfect summer dessert for festivals as well as parties.
