Eli’s has had the honor of creating many Inaugural and Presidential cakes in the past. We are proud of our quality, handmade cheesecakes and our talented associates who create these delicious desserts for such special occasions. Here’s a look back at some past celebrations:
President Clinton’s Inaugurations
1993 Eli’s Goes to Washington
To celebrate President Clinton’s first inauguration, Eli’s was invited to create a giant “Red, White and Bill” Cheesecake, which included layers of Cherry, Original Plain, and Blueberry Cheesecakes (left).
1996 “Eli’s” goes to Washington again
Because Eli’s Cheesecake was such a great hit four years earlier, Eli’s is invited to participate in President Clinton’s second inaugural festivities. In keeping with the Inaugural theme, “Building a Bridge to the 21st Century” the red, white and blue cheesecake is topped with an arched chocolate bridge a foot-and-a-half high.
President Obama’s Inauguration
In Washington D.C., January 2009, Eli’s created a 2000 lb. cheesecake for President Obama’s Commander-in-Chief’s Inaugural Ball. We were deeply honored, as the Commander-in-Chief’s ball is for US military and their families. The cake was made up of Original Plain and Apple Cheesecake (in honor of Abe Lincoln’s favorite dessert) and decorated with edible seals for each branch of the military, red and white stripes, blue fondant and gold stars.
Abraham Lincoln’s 200th Birthday
February 2009: Springfield IL had a huge celebration to commemorate Lincoln’s 200th birthday. Eli’s created three different spectacular desserts for the occasion (left to right): Miniature Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecakes each topped with an edible chocolate penny, a larger version that was a showpiece for the event (with keynote speaker President Obama) and a replica of Lincoln’s boyhood home for the 1860′s period ball at the Lincoln Museum.
Illinois Governor’s Inauguration 2011
January 10, 2011: Thanks to Executive Pastry Chef Laurel Boger for her work to create the 2011 Illinois Inauguration Cake. At the Inaugural Ball for Governor Quinn, over 3000 slices of Eli’s Cheesecake will be served along with this stunning “big cake” decorated with edible versions of the state seal of Illinois and blue stars.
