Early in the academic year of 2006-2007 at Wright College, I was approached by Keyla Torres, then President of the Student Government Association (SGA) at Wright College about her dream of opening a Cafe operated by the SGA.
There were many obstacles in opening in the Cafe from licensing, obtaining space, getting coffee and specialty food items and staffing. Keyla was most persistent and we agree to donate all desserts for the Cafe and then recruited another Chicago Family Business–Stewarts Private Blend Coffee–that also agreed to donate all coffee that would be sold at the Cafe.
Stewarts has always been a favorite of mine for its long history in Chicago dating back to 1913. At the Century of Progress in 1933 and 1934 (34 being the year that Wright College was founded), Stewarts was held in such high esteem that it was the official coffee of the Century of Progress. I value my Stewarts Coffee Cup that was used at the Fair with the tag line inside the cup that “Stewarts Private Blend Coffee…It’s really Good.”
On Friday evening, April 18th, it was an honor for me and Leo Manfredini representing Bob Stewart and Bob Tompkins of Stewarts Private Blend Coffee to receive the SGA Partnership Award for our support of the SGA Cafe.
Mr. Manfredini and I were delighted to watch Beth Barton, Advisor to the SGA, present the two inaugural SGA Cafe Scholarship Awards. We are very happy that purchases of Stewarts Private Brand Cofee and Eli’s Cheesecake go 100% to helping Wright students.
