When Eli’s Cheesecake opened its bakery on the northwest side of Chicago in 1984, one of the first organizations to welcome Eli’s to the neighborhood was the New Horizon Center for the Developmentally Disabled. Housed
in former staff housing at the corner at the corner of Oak Park Avenue and Forest Preserve Drive, New Horizon had older facilities but provided exceptional care for its children and adults with severe disabilities.

Back then little did we know that New Horizon and Eli’s would be next door neighbors all on the same campus with our educational partner, Wright College. Wright moved to the campus in 1993, Eli’s three years later in 1996 and
on Thursday, November 2nd, 2006, New Horizon had the ribbon cutting for it modern school facility. Bordered to the west by the Autumn Green at Wright Campus Senior Condominiums and to the east by Eli’s, New Horizon has a great place to call home.

Alderman Tom Allen of the 38th Ward welcomed families, friends and community members to the ribbon cutting ceremony. Alderman Allen has been an advocate for education, culture, open space and opportunities for people with disabilities in the ward.

Opened almost 40 years ago, the Board, parents, staff and students of New Horizon have waited for this ribbon cutting. A particular thanks to Carol Kilcoyne, the Executive Director of New Horizon, for her tireless support of the
children and the facility.

The ribbon cutting for New Horizon was very special for us at Eli’s because we posted a tribute in the lobby of the New Horizon Atrium in honor of our associate, Rita Tierney. Rita was devoted to Eli’s and helping the needy in the community. Eli’s has raised over $76,000 at the Annual Eli’s Cheesecake Festival for New Horizon and we look forward to exceeding our goal of $100,000.

Pictured above with the tribute to Rita is Wright College President, Charles Guengerich, Patti Carroll, Eli’s Vice President of Foodservice Sales and long time New Horizon Board Member, Eli’s Mary Gale who has assumed Rita’s responsibility as Director of Charitable Giving, and Eli’s Marc Schulman.

Eli’s is planning a dedication of the tribute to Rita with all of its associates in February of 2007.

Eli’s Marc Schulman thanks New Horizon Board Chairman John Tompkins for his dedication to the school and leadership in raising funds and seeing the building constructed on time and on budget.
