After School Matters was the dream of Chicago’s First Lady, Maggie Daley, who wanted an opportunity for teens to gain job training experiences in the arts, technology, sports and communications during those critical after-school hours. This year over 22,000 Chicago teens were served by this innovative partnership of the Chicago Public Schools. Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, over 40 community based organizations and the business community.

The event was held on Wednesday, September 14th at Millennium Park. During the reception, the After School Matters American Jazz Band performed under the “Bean.”

Wright College graduate, and now CIrcuit Court Judge,Gerald Bender, Eli’s Marc Schulman, President Chuck Guengerich of Wright College,and wife, Diane, thank Chicago First Lady, Maggie Daley, for her commitment to Chicago youth and for hosting such a wonderful event. The Happiness Club, which is based at Wright, is the sponsor of a very successful After School Matters Program at several Chicago high schools

Willie Nelson was the featured artist following performances by teen apprentices from the Downtown Summer Program and musical theatre, dance and vocal ensemble groups.

The performance concluded with a fire works show over the Pritzker Pavilion and then a special treat for all guests to enjoy on the way home–an Eli’s Chocolate Chip Crunch Dipper.
