Eli’s Blog Celebrates its Fourth Birthday—Back from a month break!

At Eli’s, we love to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.

This week marks the 4th Anniversary since I started to write the Eli’s Blog. Since then, I have written over 400 entries about our people, our products, our big cakes and our activities in the community. I have also been joined by another Blog Writer at Eli’s, Chef Sarah Zupancic, who shares her passion for great food and style at Eli’s.

For me the Blog made its debut in the first weekend of June in 2004 and it was all about education. On Friday, June 11th, 2004, I had attended the commencement exercises at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences featuring Catherine Bertini as the Commencement Speaker. Ms. Bertini was the former head of the World Food Organization of the United Nations and was named
as the winner of the Word Food Prize. Serving at that time as Under Secretary of Management for the United Nations, Ms. Bertini is today a Senior Advisor to the Global Agricultural Development Program of the Gates Foundation.

Ms. Bertini’s speech on Friday inspired me on Saturday, June 11th to deliver the commencement address at Kendall College in Evanston. This was the final Spring graduation for Kendall before it completed the move to the Riverworks Campus at Goose Island in Chicago. Kendall prospered with its move to Chicago and we congratulate its former President, Howard Tullman, for his
leadership in completing this transition and then his work in bringing Experiencia to Chicago and opening Flashpoint, Chicago’s Digital Media Arts College,

My last Blog entry was one month ago right after I delivered the commencement address at Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago. Wright is our educational partner, our Famer’s Market partner and our neighbor in the Wright Campus Business Park.

My next entry will be highlighting commencement at the Chicago HIgh School for Agricultural Sciences on Friday, June 6, 2008. Our speaker was Philip Nelson, the President of the Illinois Farm Bureau and the speech highlighted the important role that CHSAS students will play in formulating the strategies that will insure an adequate food supply for our future

So I am back writing for the Blog….just in time. We have a Father’s Day Bike Ride this Sunday, the Taste of Chicago Press Party on Tuesday and the grand opening for our Eli’s/Wright College Farmer’s Market next week.

Best wishes to all. Write me with your comments on thoughts at

Sincerely,

Marc Schulman

Celebrations at the Eli’s Cheesecake Cafe–six years ago cookie baking and today, a birthday

Growing my in the restaurant business, we were fortunate to host so many happy events for people. From birthdays to graduations and every other type of celebrations, Eli’s the Place for Steak was the annual place for so many Chicagoans and visitors to gather.

On this Saturday, February 10th at Eli’s, we had a great deal of Eli’s Magic, with Valentine’ Day Cookie Baking, a regular stream of customers for lunch and Valentine’s Day shopping and a birthday party for Nicole. Many of our guests todayshared a story of how important Eli’s has been in their lives with the celebration at Eli’s the Place for Steak of many special events with
Calves Liver Eli (yes, there was Liver Eli before Eli’s Cheesecake) and Eli’s Great Steaks.

As we think about our history in bringing joy to families, it was so great to have Nicole’s family share with me a photo taken six years ago at Eli’s Holiday Cookie Baking of me with then five year old Nicole and her brother Jake. When looking for a special place for her 11th birthday, Nicole and her family picked Eli’s. We are happy to see our tradition of bringing joy to families continue!

Eli’s Cheesecake Celebrates the 20th Birthday of the Illinois Tourism Alliance at the 2007 Governor’s Conference on Tourism

It was an honor for Eli’s Cheesecake, together with Midwest Living Magazine, to be the sponsor of the luncheon at the historic Palmer House honoring the 20th Anniversary of the Illinois Tourism Alliance, which was previously known as Visit Illinois. This group supported by Jan Kostner, the Deputy Director of the Illinois Bureau of Tourism and under the daily direction of Nina Winston, assists the tourism industry in planning for the next 20 years.

Illinois Tourism Alliance Chairman, Grant Deporter, President of Haray Caray’s Restaurant Group, Holly Agra, Chairman Elect of the Alliance and President of Chicago’s First Lady and Eli’s Marc Schulman celebrate the 20th birthday of the Alliance.

A celebration in Illinois wouldn’t be complete without a giant
Eli’s Cheesecake.

Brian Craven of Eli’s get ready to serve dessert to the over 600 attendees at the Conference.

The luncheon speaker was Lisa Ford, the author of “Exceptional Customer Service.” Lisa, a popular speaker and consultant in the customer service business enthralled the audience with stories of how bad service has destroyed organizations and how organizations that are committed to “total satisfaction” have been successful and built long term relationships with their customers.

Tribute to Eli on his birthday!

January 22nd is my father’s birth date—as celebrated at Eli’s all week and as noted on the City of Chicago 2007 birthday calendar.

What a great day this Monday is for Chicago as we celebrate the Bears win in the NFC Championship and we prepare for the Super Bowl. All the snow and Bears weather of Sunday is gone as today is a pretty Sunday in January.

Eli and a very special “Motley Chicago Bear” at the piano bar at Eli’s the Place for Steak–with the helping hand of Hal Roach.

Mike and Diana Ditka came to celebrate with Eli at Eli’s the Place for Steak on Sunday, January 12th, 1986 after the Bears beat the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 24 to 0. It was two weeks later on January 26th that the Bears and Ditka beat the Saints by a score of 46 to 10

One of Eli’s dearest friends was Gale Sayers, the legendary half back for the Bears. When a Chicago Boys & Girl Club was in danger of closing, Eli put together a benefit on a week’s notice to keep the Club open.

Monday Night Football on ABC made its debut in 1970 when the Cleveland Browns played the New York Jets. From that first broadcast until 1984, Howard Cosell was the distinctive voice of Monday Night Football. Here Cosell visits with Eli and Esther Schulman at Eli’s the Place for Steak.

From 1975 to 1987, Walter Payton rushed for 16,726 yards setting the Bears all time record. Here Payton poses with Eli and his fellow board members of McCormick Place for the dedication of the George Halas Hall at McCormick Place.

Eli’s Cheesecake Recognized by the Wall Street Journal and by a very happy daughter celebrating her dad’s birthday

As we get closer to the holidays, our phones and web site get very busy with orders for gifts and for holiday tables. We work very hard to
make sure that our customers get the same quality of service and quality of product that people have grown to expect of Eli’s. It is sort of like taking the experience that my dad delivered at Eli’s the Place for Steak where he developed his signature dessert and delivering it very carefully in dry ice and stryrofoam for the perfect celebration.

Today we were judged by the Wall Street Journal in its popular “Catalog Critic” column. In surveying a number of companies that send out
cheesecakes, the Catalog Critic judged Junior’s (a family owned company that we respect greatly) and Eli’s Cheesecake as the highest. We were judged highly for our “rich filling, dense testure and shortbread crust” and for a web site that was easy to navigate as well as excellent and personal service on the phone.

It was a great to get such important recognition from such a highly regarded publication, but my day was really made late in the afternoon
when J. Kerber of Andover, Massachusetts sent me an e-mail about the cheesecake that she ordered for delivery on Saturday, November 5th–her dad’s birthday. I know that day well as it is the date of our daughter, Haley’s, birthday so I know about family celebration on that day and can appreciate how important it was to get the cheesecake on that date.

Here is Ms. Kerber’s letter to me:

Dear Mr. Schulman,

I recently ordered one of your classic plain cheesecakes for my father’s birthday on Nov. 5th. I am writing to say what a wonderful experience the whole process was. When I called to ask customer service about sending the cheesecake for a Saturday delivery, Andi Miles of your customer service department was explicit about my needing to be present to accept the package so I could be sure to get my product into refrigeration. As I work in customer service with refrigerated items as well, I know how important this is! I assured her I would be waiting eagerly!

My father is a tough man to buy for, and never really needs anything……….so I thought I would buy him something that we could all help him enjoy. Well…..when he had his first slice he was hooked, and didn’t want to share!!!!!!!!!!!!He made me wrap up his secret stash and put it into the freezer so he could have it on hand when he wanted it. I snuck a piece anyway, and immediately could understand his greediness. It was the best cheesecake I have ever had. Thank you for a great product and experience. I will be ordering again. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

J. Keber

At Eli’s, we make customers happy one at a time and it feels great to make a birthday special for Mr. Kerber. We look forward to
bringing lots more joy to our customers this holiday season. Again, never hesitate to write me (the link is on the home page of our web site) if you want to share a story with me or to ask a question.

Invite to Join Eli to cut Chicago’s 150th Birthday Cake in 1987

Eli’s has a rich tradition of creating big cakes. Here is the invite that Eli printed in the newspaper the day that we served Chicago’s Official 150th Birthday Cake at the Taste of Chicago on June 29, 1987.

Maureen and I are on the left side of the Big Cake as Eli leads the applause as Bozo reads the Proclamation from Mayor Harold Washington. Friends on the stage (from right to left) include Attorney Dan Weil, Radio Legend John Madigan, Eli, TV Legend Merri Dee, Motivational Speaker George O’Hare, the late Dr. Harold Visotsky, Cultural Affairs Commissioner Lois Weisberg (then head of the Mayor’s Office of Special Events) and Linda MacLennan (then recently coming to Chicago to join CBS). Note we even had an Illinois Lottery Ball next to the stage.
