Children’s Memorial Celebrates its 125th Birthday with Eli’s Cheesecake

For 125 years, Chicago has been fortunate to have the compassionate care of Children’s Memorial Hospital for its children. Part of the Lincoln Park community since its founding, Children’s Memorial will
be moving to the Magnificent Mile in 2012 when its opens its new hospital on what was the site of Eli’s the Place for Steak.

The Eli M. Schulman Playground at Seneca Park will get a wonderful new neighbor bringing thousands of more children to the community when the new Children’s opens. We were delighted to bring the Cake to
Children’s for its 125th birthday party and we look forward to celebrating many times with Children’s over these next few years as Children’s gets ready to move to Streeterville.

Patrick Magoon, President and CEO of Children’s Memorial Hospital welcomes guests to the Birthday
Celebration.

Founders’ Board member Peggy Carr, Board President Leslie Newman join Pat Magoon to cut the Eli’s Birthday Cake.

Eli’s Cheesecake Roxanne and Mayra get ready to serve the birthday cake.

Children’sMemorial Hospital celebrates its 125th anniversary

Children’s Memorial recognized the 125th anniversary of its founding during a hospital-wide celebration held in the hospital’s Siragusa Lobby on May 14. The event also marked the formal announcement of the name change of the hospital’s Woman’s Board to the Founders’ Board. A Chicago City Council resolution was read during the celebration declaring it “Children’s Memorial Hospital Day” in Chicago.

“As we celebrate our 125th year of serving children and their families, there are many reasons to be enthusiastic about our future and the
future for children,” said Children’s Memorial’s President and CEO Patrick M. Magoon during his opening remarks at the celebration, which included hospital leadership and staff, board members and patient families. “Our plan to build a new, state-of-the-art hospital will transform pediatric medicine for the next 125 years for the benefit of countless children for generations to come.”

The new Children’s Memorial Hospital, which will be located in Chicago’s Streeterville community, is scheduled to open in 2012.

Children’s Memorial was founded in 1882 by Julia Foster Porter near the site of the present hospital in an eight-room cottage. Mrs. Porter
established the hospital in memory of her 13-year-old son, Maurice, who died of acute rheumatism. Children’s Memorial was the first hospital in Chicago dedicated solely to the care of children, at a time when the field of pediatric medicine did not even exist.

Magoon paid tribute to the members of the Founders’ Board, who have raised millions of dollars through fundraising and personal gifts, and have
given generously of their time by serving in hospital governance, fundraising and other volunteer roles.

In her remarks, Founders’ Board president Leslie Newman recognized the crucial role the members of the board — past and present — have played throughout the years in helping Children’s Memorial provide the best possible care for patients and families.

The event also featured a look back at the hospital’s history as Suellen Miller, a patient first treated at the hospital in 1953, recalled the skill and kindness of her doctors and nurses, who she attributed with saving her life after she was diagnosed with a serious heart defect as an
infant.

The event concluded as guests enjoyed slices of a giant cheesecake, generously donated by Eli’s Cheesecake.

Eli’s Hosts a 76th Birthday Party for Mickey Mouse at Children’s Memorial Hospital

In celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 76th birthday, Eli’s Cheesecake created a
300 lb. birthday cheesecake that was enjoyed by over 2,500 kids and their
parents at Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital. Our thanks to Eli’s Chef
Martha for creating this great treat.

Mickey Mouse was in town to lead the lighting of Michigan Avenue as part of
the 13th Annual Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. This was the second year in a
row that Eli’s and Mickey Mouse have teamed up to bring some Eli’s and and
Disney Magic to the very special people at Children’s Memorial. We know that
some people can’t make it down to Michigan Avenue for the procession so it is
great to have Mickey come to them.

To enhance the party, Grape Jam, Francis W. Parker High School’s advanced
chorale ensemble, sang “Happy Birthday” and “When you Wish Upon a star.”

Our thanks to the team at Eli’s who created and served the cake and to the
dedicated staff at Children’s.
