Sharing Eli’s Cheesecake Chicago Holiday Activities

We are in the holiday zone here at Eli’s Cheesecake World, the location of our Eli’s Cheesecake Bakery Cafe, Eli’s Cheesecake Bakery, Eli’s Cheesecake Headquarters and Eli’s Retail Store and Visitor Center.  We want to share a few highlights and events for December here in Chicago.

Each year, one of our most valued holiday traditions is the Eli’s Giving Tree.  Eli’s Associates select of a civic or charitable organization of their choice and personally deliver a supply of Eli’s Cheesecakes and Desserts.  It is our way of spreading joy in our local communities this holiday season.

Eli’s Cheesecake Annual Open House is December 9 from 5pm-7pm featuring a free dessert buffet, DJ spinning holiday music, prize wheel and 20% off everything sale (gift cards excluded).

Eli’s will be closing early on Dec. 11 at 5pm to allow our Eli’s Cheesecake Retail Associates to bring holiday cheer to our friends at the Sunshine Activity Center, a not-for-profit organization serving adults with developmental disabilities.  Our associates will be preparing dinner, playing games and celebrating a visit with Santa.

The holiday dock sale of the year is on Saturday, December 13th  from 9am-1pm.  Popular flavor selections from Original Plain to Red Velvet Cheesecake and dockbuster sale prices make this a destination for your best prices of the season.  The dock sale takes place on our shipping dock at 6701 W. Quigley Wins Stanley Cup Wager and Honors Blackhawks’ Championship with Resolution

Today, U.S. Representative Quigley received clam chowder from Legal Sea Foods and a case of Harpoon beer from U.S. Representative Lynch as a result from the wager they agreed upon over the outcome of the Blackhawks vs. Bruins during the Stanley Cup finals.

Quigley showed good sportsmanship by giving Lynch an Eli’s Cheesecake and Nuts on Clark.

500 Pound Eli’s Cheesecake called the ‘Star of the Menu’ at President Obama’s Staff Inaugural Ball

Last night, January 22, Eli’s Cheesecake’s 500 lb. Celebration Cake was the ‘star of the menu’ at President Obama’s Staff Inaugural Ball according to Obama Foodorama. This Eli’s Cheesecake masterpiece was designed and brought to life by Eli’s Executive Pastry Chef, Laurel Boger, and her bakery team.  After being baked in Eli’s Bakery, Boger and the giant cake drove 700 miles to arrive at DC by Tuesday Monday, with just enough time for Boger to add the finishing touches. In the end, the magnificent Eli’s Cheesecake had hundreds of pictures taken of it before the President even arrived, and was served, along with other Eli’s Cheesecakes, to the 10,000-15,000 guests in attendance at the Ball. Eli’s is honored to have been part of such an historic event & thanks Boger and her bakery team for all their creativity, skill, dedication and hard work!

Giant cake at the President’s last inaugural party shares the spotlight with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett…

Global superstar Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett headlined President Obama’s Staff Inaugural Ball on Tuesday night at the Washington Convention Center, the final party of the 57th Presidential Inauguration.  And the 500-pound cake created by Eli’s Cheesecake Company of Chicago was the star of the menu:  The magnificent creation had nothing else to compete with, save for pretzels and chips.  The President and First Lady Michelle Obama arrived minutes before 9:00 PM, but Twitter was already abuzz with thrilled guests posting photos of the stunning cake, which was topped with a replica of the Capitol Dome that included the gold Statue of Freedom on top.

“My main job here tonight is really simple: It’s just to say thank you,” President Obama told his guests, who numbered between 10-15,000. “All of you have come to represent for me and Michelle our deepest hopes for America.”

The crowd at the Ball serenaded the President and First Lady with one of the campaign’s anthems, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours, and they also got a real taste of Sweet Home Chicago. The cake was so tall that Eli’s executive pastry chef Laurel Boger needed a stepladder to place the Statue of Freedom on top of the Dome.

“We’re very proud, since the President is from Chicago, and so many staff are too,” company president Marc Schulman, son of founder Eli Schulman, told Obama Foodorama.

“It is very meaningful.  There are so many events, and we’re honored to play a small role.”

Baked at Eli’s Chicago headquarters, the gargantuan cake was covered in 100 pounds of buttercream frosting, with the layers alternating between chocolate chip and “original plain” cheesecake, Eli’s most popular flavors.

The behemoth used 155 pounds of cream cheese, 50 pounds of butter, 45 pounds of sugar, 40 pounds of sour cream, 20 pounds of flour, 15 pounds of chocolate chips, 5 pounds of powdered sugar, 20 dozen eggs, and two cups of Madagascar vanilla, in addition to the 100 pounds of buttercream frosting.

The cake also featured a blue and white Presidential Seal and gold stars, and today Bolger added the words “Obama” and “Biden” to the seal as she put the finishing touches on.

Other Eli’s cheesecakes were also offered to the guests, who wereWhite House and Administration staff, Obama for America staff,and Presidential Inaugural Committee staff. Proceeds from the $10 ticket sales go to a memorial fund in honor of Alex Okrent, a Campaign staffer who collapsed and died at the Chicago campaign headquarters last July.

Monday, Inauguration Day, would have been Eli Schulman’s 103rd bithday, Schulman said, so he was especially proud.

A culinary icon in the Windy City, Eli’s has been selling cheesecake since 1980 when the senior Schulman started offering the treat at his legendary Eli’s The Place for Steak, and has provided cakes for three other inaugurations, including for President Obama’s first, when they created an extravaganza for the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball (that honor this year went to Duff Goldman’s Charm City Cakes).  Both of President Bill Clinton’s inaugurations, in 1993 and 1997, featured Eli’s Cheesecakes.  (Above, Boger holds the Statue of Freedom)

After baking the cake in Eli’s Chicago headquarters, Bolger departed on Monday afternoon and drove with the cake overnight the more than 700 miles to DC, arriving this morning to get to work at the Convention Center.

President Obama was already an Eli’s fan:  He proudly posed with a chocolate-covered Eli’s cheesecake created for President Abraham Lincoln’s Bicentennial Birthday Banquet in February of 2009, in Springfield, Ill..  The President gave the keynote, and dined on the cheesecake with the many guests.  Mini versions of the centerpiece cake were topped with edible Lincoln pennies, and there was also a cheesecake in the shape of Lincoln’s humble childhood home.

The other Inaugural Balls…

On Monday night, the President and Mrs. Obama attended the only two other official inaugural balls,  The Inaugural Ball and The Commander-in Chief’s Ball, where they had their first dance of the second term, as Mrs. Obama wore a custom-made, ruby-red Jason Wu gown, anointing the young designer for a second time.  Those Balls were also star-studded, with Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, fun., Chris Cornell, Smokey Robinson and a host of other stars performing.  (Above, a long shot of the Staff Ball crowd as the President and Mrs. Obama stood on stage)

After, the President and Mrs. Obama partied until well after 3:00 AM at the White House at their own private, closed-press after party, where guests included Cabinet Secretaries, Members of Congress and more stars: Beyoncé, Katy Perry, John Mayer, Kelly ClarksonAlicia Keys and her husband Swizz Beatz, actress Ashley Judd, singer Eric BenetJohn Legendand his fiancee, model Chrissy Teigen.

Past 40 Under 40 honorees reflect on lessons learned

When Crain’s 40 Under 40 list debuted in 1989, Oprah Winfrey was riveting talk-show audiences with tabloid topics such as satanic dismemberment.

Marc Schulman, another 1989 honoree, had succeeded his late father at Eli’s Chicago’s Finest Cheesecake Inc., which would make a 2,000-pound cake for President Bill Clinton’s 1993 inauguration.

And Richard M. Daley was beginning his 22-year reign at Chicago’s City Hall with a campaign assist from a young political consultant, David Axelrod, also class of ’89, who would go on to chart Barack Obama’s historic 2008 bid for the White House.

As for Mr. Obama, the Harvard Law School student was then a summer associate at the Chicago office of law firm Sidley Austin LLP, where he met his future wife, Michelle Robinson. He would be named to the 40 list in 1993.

Since Crain’s launched 40 Under 40, its annual feature spotlighting local luminaries under the age of 40, no fewer than 1,000 up-and-comers from every walk of life have won the honor. The oldest among them began their careers when stores meant bricks without clicks, the Soviet Union hadn’t disintegrated and MTV still played music videos. Many, as we knew they would, became leading players in the business, political and cultural dramas that define our times.

 

To be sure, Chicago is home to fewer large corporations now than a quarter century ago, but a glance at the young leaders Crain’s spotlights annually confirms that the local economy remains dynamic and diverse, with a swath of midmarket companies and a startup scene that’s simmering — a Silicon Prairie 2.0.

“The difference between then and now is night and day,” says venture capitalist J.B. Pritzker, 47, class of 2000, who in 1996 raised one of Chicago’s first funds targeting Internet opportunities at Evanston’s New World Ventures. More recently, he organized a tech startup hub in the Merchandise Mart, 1871.

“Years ago, one had to roam around and scrounge to find the tools to build a new technology business in Chicago,” he adds. “Today there are many organizations that provide support and encouragement as well as capital. We now have serial entrepreneurs in Chicago, not two or three but we have dozens and dozens and dozens.”

Among them is Matt Moog, class of ’05, ex-CEO of coupon site CoolSavings Inc., now founder and CEO of consumer review site Viewpoints and founder and chairman of Built in Chicago, an online community for digital entrepreneurs.

 

Cashing in on his success, Michael Ferro Jr., class of ’98, sold software maker Click Commerce Inc. for $292 million in 2006. His current ventures include Wrapports LLC, which acquired with a group of local business leaders Sun-Times Media LLC, publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times.

At age 42, Alex Zoghlin, class of 2000, is chief executive of his seventh startup, Rosemont-based VHT Inc., which provides marketing services for the real estate industry. He was chief technology officer of travel site Orbitz Inc., which its airline founders sold for $1.25 billion in 2004.

Chicago’s highest-profile startup, Groupon Inc., was co-founded by CEO Andrew Mason, 31, class of ’09. Valued at nearly $13 billion when it went public in 2011, the daily-deal site has 12,000 employees in 48 countries. But Groupon’s shares plummeted since the IPO, rattling faith in Mr. Mason’s leadership.

While the tech startup scene emerged in the 1990s, Chicago was losing its biggest financial institutions to bank consolidation. Yet even as money center bankers faded from the local scene, an exploding financial sector and booming stock market opened opportunities in the securities field.

 

Joe Mansueto, 56, class of ’92, harnessed computer databases to analyze mutual fund performance for investors at his 1984 startup, Morningstar Inc. But he would have to wait for a commercial Web browser before his subscribers could read reports online. “We just rode the technology waves from PC to CD-ROM to Internet to mobile,” he says. “Every one of those has been a wave, and trying to figure out how to harness technology for the benefit of investors has been” the company’s challenge.

Today, Morningstar is a $650 million public company with a market cap of nearly $3 billion and 3,600 employees. Mr. Mansueto, chairman and CEO, owns nearly half its shares.

He and other self-made billionaires, such as Citadel LLC founder Ken Griffin, 44, class of ’04, are part of Chicago’s new civic elite. Mr. Griffin launched Citadel in 1990 and grew the hedge-fund and securities business into one of the nation’s largest hedge-fund managers, with about $13 billion in assets under management.

Still other “40s” rode the waves of global consolidation by rising to prominence in corporate settings. Ilene Gordon ran a business line at Packaging Corp. of America when she was named in 1991. “It’s always been my goal to run a major business. But I’m always redefining my definition of ‘major,’” she said then.

Today, Ms. Gordon is chairman, president and CEO of Westchester-based Ingredion Inc., the former Corn Products International Inc., which she catapulted into the ranks of the nation’s biggest companies, with $6.2 billion in sales last year, through growth and a $1.3 billion acquisition. She is one of only 19 women running Fortune 500 companies. About half are mothers.

 

In the political arena, Chicago’s tradition of an iron-willed mayor with national political influence continues under Rahm Emanuel, class of ’90 and Mr. Obama’s former White House chief of staff. Mr. Emanuel is tackling daunting challenges from budget shortfalls to an upsurge in violent crime.

Daniel Hamburger, class of ’99, is one of the business leaders tapped by Mr. Emanuel to reinvigorate boards such as World Business Chicago. The 48-year-old is president and CEO of DeVry Inc., the third-largest private-sector education company with $2 billion in sales, operating in 35 countries. “The outlook for people in business, government and education is increasingly global,” he says.

Few figures have raised Chicago’s profile as much as Mr. Obama, whose posse of Chicago backers includes billionaire businesswoman Penny Pritzker, class of ’91. She raised $745 million as his 2008 national campaign chair.

Ariel Investments LLC founder John Rogers Jr., 54, who co-chaired Mr. Obama’s first inauguration committee, jokes that he became chairman of University of Chicago Laboratory School’s board because Mr. Obama recruited so many board members to Washington. “He ended up taking a lot of talent with him,” Mr. Rogers says.

 

Indeed, the list extends far beyond Messrs. Axelrod and Emanuel. Valerie Jarrett, a city planning commissioner when she was a “40″ in 1994, exerts broad influence as Mr. Obama’s senior adviser. Austan Goolsbee, a star professor at University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business when picked in 2006, helped craft the administration’s $800 billion stimulus spending plan as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He returned to teaching last year.

Arne Duncan, class of ’01, is U.S. secretary of education, and Desiree Rogers, class of ’95, was White House social secretary for two years. She’s now CEO of Johnson Publishing Co., whose majority owner and chairman is Linda Johnson Rice, 53, class of ’89.

“The last five or six years have just been really tough in this country,” says Ms. Rogers, 53. “There’s so much uncertainty about what’s next,” whether globally, in national politics or in the city’s neighborhoods.

MarySue Barrett, 48, Mr. Daley’s policy chief when she was named a “40″ in ’94 and Metropolitan Planning Council’s longtime president, sees a “silver lining” to the economic downturn.

“When things really are tight, there’s a great deal of openness to try new things. But you have to marshal the leadership,” she says.

Given the track record of Crain’s 40 Under 40 honorees, leadership is one element that isn’t in short supply in Chicago.

Eli’s Annual Holiday Dinner at the Sunshine Activity Center

Thank you to the Eli’s Team for making the Annual Holiday Dinner that Eli’s hosts for the Sunshine Activity Center such a great success. We have a long and very special partnership with the Sunshine Center and this was the best Holiday Event ever—in attendance and enthusiasm. Truly Priceless.
