A Great Eli’s Encounter–by Eli Himself at Eli’s the Place for Steak

Hi Marc – I saw your invitation on the web site to
e-mail you and wanted to let you know about my experience with Eli.
I was at the steakhouse for my birthday many many
moons ago. There was a man at the next table eating spaghetti. I commented to my
father “Who would eat spaghetti in a steakhouse?” I said that louder than I
thought as unbeknown to me I was heard.
When dessert was offered the restaurant was out of
plain cheesecake. Again my big mouth said “How can the #1 cheesecake maker in
the world be out of the best cheesecake, plain?”
The rest of the party ordered, but me being stubborn declined a
Ten minutes later the “Spaghetti Man” came to the
table with 3 cheesecakes, that man was your Father. He whispered to me that at
times he wanted something other than a steak for dinner. (boy was my face red)
He offered me 3 cheesecakes to take home, try them and he’d call me to see if
any of them were to my liking as he was trying different flavors.
I was amazed when your father called me the next
week. My favorite since that day has been the Heath Bar cake, one that was not
available for sale but was being perfected.
Your father is the most famous Chicagoan I ever
met. Eli’s has been my restaurant of choice every year for my birthday since
that day, except when it was on a Monday. Whenever Eli was there he’d just smile
and giggle at me. I have never made a comment about a diner at the next table
since that day.

keeping a Chicago tradition the way I remember it.

Frommer’s Chicago 2005 highlights Eli’s the Place for Steak and the dessert tour of Eli’s Cheesecake World

The new edition for Frommer’s Chicago just came out and we are delighted to be
recommended for dinner at Eli’s the Place for Steak (a recommendation of many
years standing) and to have our dessert tour of Eli’s added as a “find.”

Eli’s the Place for Steak Celebrates on New Year’s Eve

Since 1966, Eli’s the Place for Steak has been a Chicago institution serving
the best steaks, chops, fish and Eli’s Specialties. The staff of Eli’s continues
Eli’ Schulman’s tradition of exceptional service and quality.

We had a great evening at Eli’s on Friday, December 31, 2004 welcoming in the
new year with exceptional food and music by the incomparable Hal Roach. At
Midnight, we got the staff together for a toast and photo.

Eli’s Cheesecake and the Presidential Inauguration–A Special Guest at Eli’s the Place for Steak

One of the most significant moments in Eli’s Cheesecake history was in 1993
when 20 of us from Eli’s took a Giant 2,000 lb Eli’s Cheesecake to the inaugural
of President Bill Clinton. We met then Governor Clinton in March of 1992, on the
eve of the Illinois primary, when he visited our bakery with Mrs. Clinton to see
Eli’s Cheesecake being made and to learn about Eli’s U-our onsite workforce
development program that is run in connection with Wright College.

That was an important week in the campaign as Clinton’s subsquent success in
Illinois and Michigan secured the nomination for him. For us, it put us on the
cover of the New York Times and the Washington Post and made the lead item on
Face the Nation the following Sunday as well as being a recorded event for
CSPAN”s Road to the White House. This was really our 60 minutes of fame.

Tonight Merrick Alpert and his family dined at Eli’s the Place for Steak.
Merrick was crtical to our Big Cake getting toWashington as he was a member of
the senior staff for the Presidential Inaugural Committee. He arranged for our
Giant Cheesecake to be on the Mall and later took Eli’s to Bosnia as a member of
the US Air Force Reserves. Today he resides in his home state of Connecticut and
we look forward to his success in seeking public office.
