One of the highlights of the Summer Entrepreneurship Food Program that is hosted by Wright College and Eli’s Cheesecake for a select group of students from the Chicago High School of Agricultural Sciences is a guest
speaker from the food industry each week.

This week, we were honored to welcome Jim Slama, the President of Sustain, which is one of the country’s leading
non-profit organizations working for a healthy environment. For the past few years Sustain has been supporting the growth of a regional food system in the Midwest by establishing markets for many organic and sustainable family farms inIllinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

One of Sustain’s most successful programs is, which includes a website, food label, and EXPO to support Midwestern organic farmers by connecting them with consumers and commercial buyers. creates sustainable economic development, builds community, and contributes to a healthy environment by encouraging people to buy food from local producers.

Jim made a tremendous committment to expanding opportunities for small farms and other producers with his editing of “Organic Harvest,” an action plan for local, organic and family farmed foods. The report can be downloaded at
