Eli’s, Wright College, Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences and Local Beet Announce Summer Lecture Series in Sustainable Agriculture in connection with the Thursday Eli’s/Wright Farmers Market (from June 24 to July 22)
Held every Thursday starting in mid-June, the Eli’s Cheesecake/Wright College Farmers Market has developed a loyal clientele of market shoppers and vendors over its 10 year history. Unique for its educational component with Wright College, the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences and the Master Gardeners of the University of Illinois Extension and its social service partners in New Horizon Center for the Developmentally Disabled, Vaughn High School, Bright Endeavors and Urban Meadows, Eli’s hosted a celebration to thank all the partners and Chad Nichols of Nichols Farms for his strong support and participation.

Eli’s Kathy Kirby is both our Protocol Director and our Farmers Market Manager. It has been Kathy’s hard work and optimism that has made the Market successful.
Eli’s commitment to culinary excellence is in large part due to our Executive Vice President, Jolene Worthington’s, love and understanding for fine foods. Here Jolene celebrates with Jennifer Doezie, Eli’s People Person, and a burgeoning chef.

This Thursday, Nichols Farms of Marengo, Illinois and Piedt Farms of Eau Claire, Michigan will be highlighting their farm grown peppers at the Eli’s/Wright College Farmers Market. Red, Green and Yellow Peppers will be highlighted and are perfect in the recipe below. For those who can’t wait to get home, Eli’s Chef Antonio will be grilling Steak Tacos with a selection of Red, Green and Yellow Peppers.

This Thursday, July 23rd, at the Eli’s/Wright Farmer’s Market is FAMILY DAY! Please join us for FREE activities featuring a LIVE performance of The Momentary Opera by Redmoon theater at Noon!
There is also face painting for kids and dance lessons with Dancemates, 11am-12pm. Later, enjoy a sustainable agriculture lecture at 1:00pm with guest speakers MELISSA GRAHAM & ROB GARDNER – Melissa Graham is President & Founder of Purple Asparagus; Rob Gardner is Editor-at-Large and founding member of thelocalbeet.com.
Next Thursday, July 30th, is National Cheesecake Day! To celebrate, everyone gets a FREE slice of cheesecake (one per person) 11am-2pm. Other fun, free activities include live music by The Happiness Club and legendary pianist Hal Roach at noon, a flower arranging demonstration with Bob Neri at 11am, and an informative Sustainable Agriculture lecture at 1:00pm with Guest speakers JIM BRAUN & DEBBIE HILLMAN – coordinators for the Illinois Local & Organic Food & Farm Task Force and builders of an Illinois field-to-fork food system. Top it all off with some free samples from our cheesecake bar.
The Farmer’s Market takes place at our bakery, 6701 W. Forest Preserve Drive, Chicago, every Thursday, 7am-1pm, through October 15th.

The highlight of our Summer Thursday Farmers Market with Wright College is the Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneurship Lecture Series sponsored with the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.
Today we were honored to welcome Orrin Williams. Recognized by Chicago Magazine with its coveted Green Award, Orrin is the New Projects Director for Growing Home, a not for profit that used organic farming to provide job training for hard to employ individuals.
In 2002, Growing Home harvested its first crop of vegetables from a ten-acre organic farm in LaSalle County and now also operates an organic garden in Back of the Yards and a year-round urban organic farm on Wood Street. Products are available at Green City Market in Lincoln Park, at a seasonal Wood Street farm stand, through a home delivery program, and at the Englewood Farmers Market.
