Orrin Williams of Growing Home Speaks at Eli’s/Wright College Farmers Market

The highlight of our Summer Thursday Farmers Market with Wright College is the Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneurship Lecture Series sponsored with the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.
Today we were honored to welcome Orrin Williams. Recognized by Chicago Magazine with its coveted Green Award, Orrin is the New Projects Director for Growing Home, a not for profit that used organic farming to provide job training for hard to employ individuals.
In 2002, Growing Home harvested its first crop of vegetables from a ten-acre organic farm in LaSalle County and now also operates an organic garden in Back of the Yards and a year-round urban organic farm on Wood Street. Products are available at Green City Market in Lincoln Park, at a seasonal Wood Street farm stand, through a home delivery program, and at the Englewood Farmers Market.

July 2nd Eli’s Cheesecake/Wright College Farmers Market is a great success!

The third week of the Eli’s Cheesecake/Wright College Farmers Market brought a new addition with Piedt Farms of Eau Claire, Michigan.  Together with Nichols Orchards of Marengo and the Chicago High School of Agricultural Sciences Farm Stand , there is a variety of fruit and vegetables from our region. Also today we were delighted to welcome Mayor Daley’s Bicycle Ambassadors and the Department of Aviation Community Outreach Vehicle.

Eli’s/Wright College Happy to Host Chris Koetke, Dean at Kendall College, as a Speaker for the Farmer’s Market

Farmers Markets are in full swing!

Eli’s Cheesecake and Wright College host Farmers Markets every Thursday in the parking lot of Eli’s Cheesecake World from 7AM – 1PM.

The first two markets were very successful, with beautiful days and great turnouts! The second market, on Thursday, June 25 2009, marked the debut of our Speakers Program with the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, with Chris Koetke, Dean of the School of Culinary Arts at Kendall College. CHSAS will be a weekly presence at the Eli’s Cheesecake/Wright College Farmers Market

Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences Farmstand comes to the northwest side.

Produce, Crafts and Honey from the Ag School are favorites of the Mt. Greenwood and Beverly communities For the summer of 2009, CHSAS will be a weekly presence at the Eli’s Cheesecake/Wright College Farmers Market. Scott Simon of NPR highlighted the students and programs recently on NPR Weekend Edition Saturday.

Students at Chicago’s High School for Agricultural Sciences learn from farming livestock and crops, but they also train for several other careers. Ag High’s curriculum includes subjects such as English, history and science, along with classes literally taught in the field.

Eli’s/Wright College Farmers Market Celebrates 12 years of Bringing Fresh Fruits, Vegetables, Plants, Flowers & Education to the Northwest side of Chicago.

There are twenty Farmers Markets in neighborhoods throughout the City of Chicago. With all the demands upon farmers and the high cost of fuel during the summer of 2008, you have to be very appreciative of the farmers that make the market possible. For the Eli’s/Wright College Farmers Market, our “iron man” has been Chad Nichols and Nichols Farms of Marengo. Offering an outstanding selection of fresh fruits and vegetables on our Thursday market that started in mid-June and continued through the end of October, Chad has developed a loyal following from the Portage Park, Dunning, Harwood Heights and Norridge







One of the amenities for our guests at the Eli’s/Wright College Farmers Market is a complimentary continental breakfast between 7 and 9am for market shoppers. We developed a regular group of families, seniors and commuters who made the Eli’s/Wright College Farmers Market the way they started Thursday mornings. For our closing market on Thursday, October 30th, Eli’s Master Gardener and Market Manager Kathy Kirby, Eli’s Executive Vice President, Jolene Worthington, and Jennie Doezie created a special breakfast buffet.

















Nichols Farms of Marengo has developed a reputation for being one of the region’s best operated and most innovative specialty farm and orchard. We are very grateful for for the support of the Nichols Family and Chad Nichols (along with his associate, Carol) who is with us every Thursday and has developed a tremendous repertoire with our neighbors. The Eli’s/Wright College Farmers Market was so successful this year that Chad has agreed to start an early market in mid-May with fresh flowers.


 From day one, Eli’s has partnered with Wright College to operate and promote the market. We are grateful to Victoria Cooper, the head of Environmental Technology at Wright, who has been our partner with the Chicago High School of Agricultural Sciences Food Entrepreneurship Summer Program as well as seeing the potential for a market in our community. Above, Marc Schulman thanks Alba Pezzarossi, the head of Continuing Education at Wright and Mary Lou, the market coordinator for Wright, for their support and initiatives during the summer. Each week, Wright provided entertainment and educational and family
programs using the resources of the continuing education department.








One great addition to the Eli’s/Wright Farmers Market was the summer long participation by Drusilla Banks of the University of Illinois Extension. Housed at Wright, Drusilla brought Master Gardeners and Master Food Preservers to the market on a weekly basis as well as working with students from CHSAS during the summer entrepreneurship institute.








One of Eli’s greatest and most worthy partners is the New
Horizon Center for the Developmentally Disabled. New Horizon students come over
regularly to participate in the market as guest and also to sell their crafts.

Fresh Corn on the Cob on the Menu at the Eli’s Cheesecake Cafe at the Eli’s Cheesecake Festival

One of the great treats of the Eli’s Cheesecake/Wright College
Farmers Market in September is the fresh corn on the cob in the husk from
Nichols Farms.

The Nichols corn on the cob will be roasted this weekend as one
of the signatures dishes at the Eli’s Grill at the Eli’s Cheesecake Festival.
