Happy Holidays From Eli’s Cheesecake

givingtree09

The holiday rush is almost over. Holiday Mail Orders delivered around the country almost all accounted for. The Eli’s Cheesecake Bakery Cafe has just a few hours to go as last minute shoppers rush in.

Our offices are now closed and our Bakery silent as Eli’s People enjoy a few days of rest and relaxation with their families.

In order to show our personal support for the community, almost 100 of us at Eli’s have participated in the “Annual Holiday Giving Tree.” For this annual Eli’s Tradition,  Eli’s Associates personally deliver a donation of Eli’s Cheesecake (to serve 100) to a charity or not-for–profit of their choice. There is something very special when you pick the recipient and deliver it yourself.

Eli’s Cheesecake Hosts its 2nd Annual Holiday Dinner for the Sunshine Activity Center

Eli's Team at Sunshine Center

At Eli’s, we are very proud of our partnership with the Sunshine Activity Center. The Sunshine Activity Center is an adult social service organization, that provides evening activities and dinner for a group of very special people on Chicago’s northwest side.

For the second year, associates at Eli’s spent an evening at the Center serving a delicious Turkey Dinner, Eli’s Cheesecake made with Oreos  and  Hot Chocolate with marshmallows. Following dinner, Eli’s Becky Smith called some very fun games of “Eli’s Cheesecake Bingo”…names on the card included “Whoopie Pie,” “Smoosh” and many other Eli’s Exclusives.

After Bingo, the guests serenaded  us! And then everyone went home with an Eli’s Cheesecake for their family.

Seneca Park & the Eli M. Schulman Playground lit for the Holidays!

It was in May of 1990 that Chicago celebrated the opening of the Eli M. Schulman Playground and the reconstruction of Seneca Park. That project was due to the dedication of a number of volunteers and funders who worked together to create a very special place for children and families across from Eli’s the Place for Steak and  east of Engine Company 98 and the Historic Water Tower. It was the perfect tribute to our founder, Eli M. Schulman, who watched over the Park for over twenty years.

Today, Eli’s the Place for Steak has been gone for over 4 years as Eli’s site is going to be the new home of Children’s Memorial Hospital.  New neighbors since the dedication in 1990 are American Girl Place, now in Water Tower with windows overlooking the Park, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Prentice Woman’s Hospital–a very special place for children.

Northwestern Memorial Team

Thanks to Donnley Phillips and the Facilities Team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for their work in preparing Seneca Park for the lighting of the trees. This was a community effort that was led by Ralph Weber, Vice President of Community Affairs for Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Seneca Park Group

The lighting of Seneca Park and the Eli M. Schulman Playground was a community project. Contributing to the lighting, which was 100% paid privately, was Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Eli’s Cheescake, Children’s Memorial Hospital , American Girl Place, the Ritz Carlton, the Lookingglass Theatre, the Museum of Centemporary Art, the American Dental Association, Engine Company 98 of the Chicago Fire Department and the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association.

Northwestern Leadership

Joining  Eli’s Marc Schulman and Northwestern Memorial’s Ralph Weber for the lighting of the trees at Seneca Park was Dennis Murphy of Northwestern, Peter Simoncelli,  Chairman of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, Dr. Michael Ruchim of Northwestern, John Chikow, the President and CEO of GNMAA,  Patrick  Ghielmetti, Regional Vice President for the Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons Hotels and  Rouhy Shalabi, attorney and Chicago Park District Commissioner.

Eli’s Cheesecake Brings Holiday Dinner to the Sunshine Activity Center

Eli’s Cheesecake Brings Holiday Dinner to our Friends at the Sunshine Activity Center

The bad weather in mid-December delayed the holiday party for the guests at the Sunshine Activity Center, our neighbor on Montrose.

Last night, on Wedneday, January 7th, Eli’s Chefs Fidel and Antonio were joined by a group of Eli’s Volunteers, who brought great food, hospitality and Eli’s Bingo to this outstanding group of adults. Hearing “Whoopie Pie” called by Becky is truly a hoot!

Thank you to Jolene, Jennie, Lisa, Kathy, Lucy and Becky and Chefs Antonio and Fidel for being such great hosts.

Snow was falling Dec. 1 on the snowmen in the inflatable globe in front of Eli’s Cheesecake World, 6701 W. Forest Preserve Drive. Outside, light snow was falling, dusting the top of the globe, and white lights were glittering on the trees surrounding Eli’s. Inside, students from the 30-member Art Club at Ridgewood High School in Norridge were painting holiday motifs on the windows of the cafe.

“We do this every year – for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Halloween,” said Art Club sponsor Sarah Machaj. “We print out clip art, so the students have some idea where to start. For safety reasons, we only paint a border around each window.”

Students are asked to use bright colors, and they are not allowed to sign their work, Machaj said.

“We look forward to their coming,” said Marc Schulman, owner of Eli’s. “They’re good kids.”

Seniors Katherine Mistal and Gabriella Marti, both of Norridge, share the Art Club vice presidency. “We’ve always done the New Year window here,” said Mistal, 17, adding some finishing touches to a top hat on the Happy New Year window. “We create our own ideas – on site.”

Sophomore Richard Serrano, 16, of Norridge, painted a colorful string of holiday lights around one window and added “Holiday” in script at the top. On a lower window, he painted a chimney, a rooftop and a sliver of Santa’s sack filled with presents. The students use water-soluble tempera paints.

Mistal finished her section of the Happy New Year window with a pair of champagne flutes filled with festive, bubbling – what?

“Sparkling grape juice,” she said quickly. “Of course.”
