Miguel Juarez Middle School Students Help Clean Up Eli’s

For the past 6 years, Eli’s has benefitted from our partnership with Ray & Erin Arceo and students from Miguel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan. In the past years, we have spruced up the Eli M. Schulman Playground and Seneca Park as part of the Chicago’s Friends of the Park Annual Earth Day Parks & Preserves Clean-up program.  However, a questionable weather forecast for Saturday, May 7th resulted in the day being reorganized.  This year, the students planted and cleaned our business park grounds here at Eli’s Cheesecake World. They also got the chance to decorate their own cheesecakes to bring home. It was very special to have these dedicated kids here with us on that special day.

Eli’s says thank you to the student volunteers of Miguel Juarez Middle School

Earth Day 2007 was one of the most beautiful days of the year in Chicago. It was a day that brought people to the parks and the lakefront to enjoy Chicago at its best. We thank the students from Miguel Juarez Middle School who gave up their Saturday to spruce up The Eli M. Schulman Playground at Seneca Park.

The Earth Day volunteers from Miguel Juarez Middle School gather in front of Engine Company 98 of the Chicago Fire Department. One of the oldest working firehouses in Chicago, Engine Company 98 celebrated its Centennial Anniversary in 2002.

We are very grateful for the partnerships that make our Earth Day Celebration so successful. On the left is a picture of Eli’s, Marc Schulman, with Leticia Tremaine of the Chicago Park District and Barbara Dolinger, the Learn & Service Coordinator at Juarez. On the right is Juarez teacher, Ray Arceo, who initiated the partnership with his wife, and Eli’s sales manager,
Erin Arceo. Ray and Erin are holding up a Earth Day 2007 T-shirt with Erin’s sister, Meg.

The activitity for Earth Day was to transport and arrange two truck loads of wood chips in the Eli M. Schulman Playround. The students were great workers and finished the entire project.

Juarez students created banners for the day to celebrate the second year of this collaboration.

The Juarez students worked great in teams.

The Eli. Schulman Playround and Seneca Park have won numerous awards for its design and excellent layout for children and visitors. With all of the tourism on the Magnificent Mile and so many children in the neighborhood, it is so important to enhance to Park for the summer.

Seneca Park and the Eli M. Schulman Playground neighor to the North is Water Tower Place and the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The Ritz Carlton is one of Chicago’s most luxurious hotels and has been an active supporter of the Park and Playground dating back to hosting the major fundraiser with the late Bobby Short as the featured performer. On Earth Day, the hotel guests included the defending NBA Champions, the Miami Heat. President and Team Coach, Pat Riley, stopped to meet some of the students as he left the hotel for the United Center.

Our deepest thanks to Engine Company 98 of the Chicago Fire Department for hosting our breakfast and then finishing off the clean-up by power washing the walkways and watering the flowers.

What better way to top of a morning of hard work than with lunch and dessert at Eli’s Cheesecake World. The students enjoyed lunch under our Big Top and then decorated Eli’s Cheesecake Slices for dessert.

Eli’s Cheesecake and Wright College proud to Partner with the Miguel Juarez Middle School of Waukegan

The Eli’s Cheesecake Company and the

Miguel Juarez Middle School

On June 21, 2006,
students from Miguel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan, Illinois culminated their Learn & Serve Summer Mini-Camp at Eli’s Cheesecake World in Chicago, Illinois. With students and staff from Juarez along with the generosity and graciousness of Marc S. Schulman and the people of Eli’s Cheesecake, the event got under way.

The students and the people of Eli’s indulged in a continental breakfast while introductions and certificates were exchanged to commemorate the day. After the recognition of students and staff, the tour of Eli’s began inside the café. Here, Marc S. Schulman welcomed the students and staff to remind each person the meaning of service learning.

This is the third time students from Juarez Middle School and Eli’s partnered together to share the importance of leadership and citizenship-the backbone of the Learnand Serve philosophy. The students of Juarez Middle School and Eli’s have previously collaborated on Earth Day–April 22nd, 2006. Together, the students and Eli’s employees celebrated Earth Day by cleaning the Eli M. Schulman Playground at Seneca Park. This year was particularly successful because of the leadership and hard work put forth by the combined efforts of 47 middle school students, faculty from the Miguel Juarez Middle school, and Eli’s employees. It is within this collaboration that students, faculty, community, and business truly appreciate the hard work, opportunity, and relationship that is beneficial for the greater good of servicing those around us.

After the tour of the Eli’s Cheesecake World facility, the students, staff, and several Eli’s people embarked to Wright College. During this time, the students were given a taste of college life and enlightened with a brief history of Wright College and post high school pathways. To end this special day, the students and staff headed back to Eli’s for more dining and decorating. Our thanks from Juarez Middle School is extended, again, to Marc S. Schulman, President of Eli’s Cheesecake, Erin Arceo (significant other to Ray Arceo), Donna Carberry, and the people of Eli’s in making this relationship and partnership successful.

Eli’s Cheesecake and the Students and Staff at the Miguel Juarez Middle School Celebrate Earth Day by sprucing up the Eli M. Schulman Playground at Seneca Park

It had to be the most beautiful Earth Day–April 22nd–in Chicago History. Continuing a long time annual tradition, the people of Eli’s Cheesecake with the support of the Chicago Park District and Engine Company 98 of the Chicago Fire Department gathered for the annual Spruce-Up of the Eli M. Schulman Playground at Seneca Park.

What made this year most special and successful was the leadership and hard work of 47 middle school students plus teachers from the Miguel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan, Illinois, Recently renamed in honor of the late Police Chief in Waukegan, the students at Juarez have a commitment to community service. We thank Barbara Dolinger, Student Advisor, and Ray Arceo, Physical Education Instructor (and husband of Eli’s Erin Arceo) for their support in making this day possible.

We also thank all of the students for helping contribute to the beauty of Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile. These students gave up much of their Saturday and travelled almost 50 miles to help clean up this playground that is used by so many visitors and residents. Several of these young people had recently moved to this country and this was their first visit to the Magnificent Mile. What a great demonstration of character by youth and a great committment of support by their faculty advisors.

For over 100 years, Engine Company 98 has protected the Streeterville Community. We are very grateful of their protection today of our neighborhood and for keeping a watchful eye over Seneca Park and its Eli M, Schulman Playground. Our thanks today to Captain Madden and the men and woman of Engine Company 98 who hosted our breakfast with the students this morning

Engine Company 98 is located just west of the Eli M. Schulman Playground. To the west of the firehouse is Chicago’s historic Water Works and the home of the world famous Lookingglass Theatre.

Our thanks to Eli’s, Sarah Zupancic, Maryanne Gaw, and Donna Carberry for organizing such a successful Earth Day activity. Also to Len Simkowski, Mary Gale, Mark Bouchard and Diana Moles for supporting the students and making sure the Playground will be tip-top for the season.

Our thanks to Eli’s Erin Arceo, and to her husband, Ray Arceo, physical education instructor at Miquel Juarez Middle School, who introduced us to these great kids.
