Wayne’s Weekend on NBC5 Chicago Features Eli’s Erin Arceo and Participating Chefs in a Taste of Chicago’s Culinary Schools

Congratulations to Erin Arceo of Eli’s Cheesecake for her work in leading the Chicago Foodservice Marketing Club Taste of Chicago’s Culinary Schools to be hosted at Eli’s Cheesecake Bakery next Friday, February 29th. Our special guest emcee will again be Wayne Johnson of Wayne’s Weekend on NBC5 Chicago.

This morning, Erin appeared on Wayne’s Weekend with chefs from the Washburne Culinary Institute and the Cooking & Hospitality Institute of Chicago. The segment will be broadcast again this Saturday at 9:45 am on the NBC5 News.

Eli’s Pastry Chef Laurel Boger Previews Eli’s Desserts for the NBC 5 Sunday Morning Show.


NBC 5 Chicago Anchor Zoraida Sambolin samples the Eli’s Cheesecake the she decorated on the NBC5 Sunday Morning News. Eli’s congratulates Zoraida on joining Dick Johnson on the NBC 5 News during the week.

Eli Cheesecake and Cheesecake Festival

Recipe: Almost-Eli’s Original Cheesecake

  • Preparation time: 20 minutes
  • Cooking time: 45 minutes
  • Chilling time: 8 hours or overnight
  • Yield: 12 slices
  • 4 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 6 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • graham cracker or cookie crust for 9-inch spring form pan (recipe follows)

    Heat oven to 350 degrees. Beat cream cheese, sugar and
    flour in mixing bowl of an electric mixer until light and creamy. Add eggs and
    yolk, one at a time, scraping down sides of bowl until completely incorporated.
    Add sour cream and vanilla. Beat mixture, scraping down sides of bowl, until
    smooth. Pour mixture into prepared crust in un-greased 9-inch spring form pan;
    place on cookie sheet. Bake until cake is firm around edge and center barely
    jiggles when tapped, about 45 minutes. Refrigerate at least 8 hours or overnight
    to completely set up before serving.

    Graham Crust
  • 1 ½ cups graham meal
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup melted butter
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon Mix all ingredients in medium bowl using your fingertips
    until mixture is well moistened.

    Chocolate Coating
  • 2 tbsp. Vegetable oil
  • 12 oz. Bittersweet chocolate, chopped Melt chocolate: Combine oil and
    chocolate pieces in microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on 50% power until chocolate
    is completely melted and smooth, stirring every 20 seconds, for about 4-5
    minutes (times may vary).

Eli’s Cheesecake Welcomes Bruce Wolf’s “Barely Today” at 4:30am on NBC 5 Chicago

This morning, Monday, January 15th at 4:30 a.m., NBC 5 Chicago debuted “Barely Today” at 4:30 am hosted by Bruce Wolf…and Eli’s Cheesecake was there!

Wolf is the sportscaster for the NBC 5 Morning News and this marks an exciting new time for Chicagoans to get news on both NBC 5 and a simulcast on WLUP-FM. For us at Eli’s who start baking early, it is a good way to get news, sports and entertainment on television and the radio.

Bruce Wolf and co-anchor Ellie Pai Hong, along with NBC 5 President and General Manager, Larry Wert, are presented with a commemorative Eli’s Cheesecake by Eli’s Marc Schulman shortly before “Barely Today” makes its debut at 4:30 am.


It is day one on the “Barely Today set” celebrating a Bears victory in the NFC Semi-Finals with an Eli’s Cheesecake front and center.

Anchorman Bets Bounty On Bears Victory

CHICAGO — Mayors in cities involved in big sports contests often make bets on which team will win, so NBC5′s morning team decided they, too, should throw down the gauntlet, challenging a childhood friend of Dick Johnson’s who now works in national advertising for the Seattle Times.

Charlie Gardner called into NBC5 News Today Wednesday to exchange friendly sports banter with Johnson and the team. Each offered their bounty of goods to the other, dependent on the outcome of Sunday’s matchup at Soldier Field.

“On the virtually impossible chance that the Seahawks beat us,” Johnson said, “we are promising Charlie and his co-workers at the Times three Lou Malanati’s pizzas, plus an Eli’s cheesecake that he forced us to throw in.”

The news team would also have to wear Seahawks and Seattle hats on the air, he said.

Speaking at a very early Pacific Standard Time by phone, Gardner offered three pounds of “mouthwatering and delicious smoked salmon from the great Northwest,” along with a congratulatory ad in his award-winning newspaper’s sports section, which would include pictures of the NBC5 morning team.

Gardner said that neither the Seahawks nor the team’s fans are concerned about the possibility of foul weather at Soldier Field Sunday, considering they’ve suffered some of Seattle’s worst weather in decades over the past several months.

“We’ve seen the rain, the snow, the sleet, the wind and everything in the past few months, and we’re looking forward to (Chicago’s weather),” he said

It’s Eli’s Cheesecake Festival Time!

Eli’s Pastry Chef, Laurel Boger, kicked off the 10th Annual Eli’s Cheesecake Festival with a live demonstration at the NBC 5 Michigan Avenue Studio. Joining her in the demonstration of how to create an Eli’s Michigan Apple Smoosh, was the Michigan Apple Queen, Ashley Wright, Eli’s
President, Marc Schulman, anchor Rob Elgas of the NBC 5 Chicago Weekend News and weatherman, Pete Sack.

The Eli’s Cheesecake Festival is on all day at Eli’s Cheesecake World this Saturday and Sunday. Check out for further details.
