Saijyo Agricultural High School Visits Eli’s Cheesecake

On December 19th, Eli’s Cheesecake was visited by representatives of the Saijyo Agricultural High School from Hiroshima, Japan  as part of their visit to Chicago and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences. Yoshrinori Tatsukami, the Principal, and Katsuhiro Ishii, the Agriculture Teacher and Chief of the Super Science High School came to Eli’s with Bill Hook, Principal and Sheila Fowler, the Agriculture Department Chair at CHSAS. They toured Eli’s Bakery with Mike Neuhaus and then were able to meet with Jeff Anderson. We were delighted with Mr. Tastsuakmi’s comment that visiting Eli’s Cheesecake was like the dream he had of America when he growing up: cookies baking in the kitchen by smiling family members. All of us at Eli’s are pleased that he was able to see our dedication to quality and service.

After their visit to Eli’s, the representatives from Saijvo were recognized at a meeting of the Board of the Chicago Public Schools. They also were able to tour the Farm and Agricultural Education Facilities at Illinois State University.

The Saijyo Agricultural High School is 102 years old and has 808 students. It has the goal to become the number 1 agricultural high school in Japan while emphasizing both basic and high level technical education while attracting students who have high aspirations, the spirit of challenge, affection to life and want to make a major contribution to society. Certainly a mission very akin to the work at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.

Eli’s Cheesecake: a tasty tour for a tiny price

Sep 17, 2010

When it comes to splurges, there are few things more decadent and delicious than cheesecake. And when it comes to cheesecake, there are few places in the world that do it better than The Eli’s Cheesecake Company in Chicago.

First offered in 1980 as a menu item at Eli’s Place for Steak restaurant, the dessert became a favorite of famous clientele like footballer Gale Sayers and President Bill Clinton. Eli’s Cheesecake debuted at the first Taste of Chicago that year, and it has since become the No. 1 dessert at Taste, selling nearly 2 million slices at the annual festival.

Eli’s Cheesecake World — a 62,000-square-foot bakery, café and visitors center — was later opened on Chicago’s northwest side to support national demand. The bakery makes thousands of cheesecakes weekly in a wide variety of flavors. Visitors can purchase the sinfully delicious treats and see how they’re made, thanks to daily tours.

Eli’s Experience, a walk-in tour conducted Monday through Friday at 1 p.m., costs just $3. The tour begins with a video presentation in which visitors learn about famous Eli’s fans like Frank Sinatra, the history of Eli’s through the years, and how cheesecakes are created from the crumbly crust up.

Tour participants are then rought into the bustling, high-tech bakery section, where they can see Eli’s products being created, decorated and packed. A return trip to the café offers a complimentary slice of Eli’s cheesecake in several flavors, and is a delightful capper to the tour.

For those unable to attend a weekday tour, there’s always Eli’s: Tasting and Traditions, a walk-in experience available Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. This free event includes a presentation and a sample of cheesecake and three other Eli’s products. A takery tour isn’t included, but the presentation and samples are well worth the trip.

Named the top food tour in the nation by the Food Network, a visit to Eli’s is a fun, inexpensive way to spend an afternoon. Kids and adults alike will enjoy learning about the history of Eli’s Cheesecake, delight in seeing the production process — and everyone will smile wide as they take a big bite of ooey, gooey cheesecake.

Eli’s Cheesecake bakery tours

Food Network rated this tour No. 1 in its survey of tasty tours, and Eli’s Mary Gale says it’s no surprise.

“Everyone loves cheesecake,” she says.

Eli’s employee Margie Ware has been conducting the popular tours for the last couple of years and always starts with a historical overview of the company — how Eli Schulman came up with his signature dessert for his now-shuttered steakhouse. The tour is very hands-on, with factory workers politely fielding any questions as you trace what goes into a cheesecake and how they are made, decorated and packaged. Groups of less than nine can take a 40-minute tour of Eli’s Cheesecake World (6701 W. Forest Preserve Dr.) at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday without a reservation. The $3 fee includes a slice of cheesecake. Call (773) 736-3417 or visit

Eli’s Cheesecake World Tour Gains More Fans and Gives our Customers a Better Understanding of What Makes Eli’s Special

We have been fortunate to have been recognized by the Food Network as the Top
Tasty Food Tour in the country. With all the great food tours, that is quite a
feat. We can only continue to earn that title by giving our customers a great
experience when they come to Eli’s. I just got these notes from two fans who
visited us recently. As you can see. our most valuable resource is our people
and their committment to our customers and our products. Please come visit us

My daughters and I took the factory tour on Friday, August 20. What a great
place! My 2 1/2 year old was really interested and my 8 year old wants her
birthday party there.I’m going to suggest this as a Girl Scout trip, so they can
see what goes into making something that is sold. Plus, I’ve told a few people
never to complain about the price they pay for an Eli’s Cheesecake, after seeing
all the handmade workings and the testing; it’s well worth it.

Finally, it was very nice to meet you as we were going out the door.

National Foundation for Teaching Entreprenuership BizCamp tours Eli’s Cheesecake World

We are delighted to have many interesting groups visit Eli’s each day. We are
particulary excited to have school groups visit us who are looking at the food
industry for career opportunities and entrepreneurial opportunities. For that
reason, we were delighted to host a group for 15 high school students and recent
graduates who visited us at part of NFTE’s BizCamp. For a week, these students
are meeting with leading entrepreneurs and getting guidance on how to make their
business plans better. It was great fun for Jeff Anderson, Colin Kenney and
myself of Eli’s to meet with the student entrepreneurs and to learn more about
their business plans in fashion retailing, gift baskets and computer games to
name a few.The students finished the day by decorating cheesecakes to take

NFTE is a partner with a number of Chicago Public Schools and this year is
expanding to the Chicago High School for Agricultural Science. If you or a
member of your family is fortunate to be enrolled in a school with a NFTE
program, take advantage of it.
