The original version of this creamy Italian dessert was so popular with English visitors in 19th-century Florence that it was dubbed zuppa inglese, or “English soup.” A similar dessert was reintroduced as tiramisù, which translates as “pick-me-up”—and it certainly lifts the spirits! Made by Eli’s Cheesecake Co. in Chicago, ours is formed from layers of espresso-infused sponge cake, mascarpone and cream cheese, then topped with a dusting of cocoa.
